Description

A conversation with Mark Grayson, Distinguished Engineer, Office of Mobility CTO, Cisco

VoLTE and VoWi-Fi will coexist and complement each other. But should operators and enterprises allocate the voice traffic to the two interfaces? What are the relative advantages and challenges of the two technologies? Mark Grayson, Distinguished Engineer and CTO, Office of Mobility, Cisco, shared his insight with us on these topics.

“How does it compare with VoLTE from a calls perspective? A great quote I’ve got from a carrier is that the best experience he ever had from an IMS call was one delivered over his Wi-Fi network, not over his LTE network. Compared with LTE, it delivers a parity of quality when it’s engineered well, an engineered VoLTE network,” Mark said.

For the enterprise, VoWi-Fi may bring benefits that go beyond cost savings. Mark added: “if we look at the enterprise in the broader sense, there is a set of enterprises that want to serve their users, their visitors, irrespective of carrier affiliation. Here we see Wi-Fi Calling has some benefits over the alternative licensed propositions, in terms of being able to serve all the users, all the visitors to a particular venue, irrespective of their affiliated carrier.”
