A tone generator and probe helps you trace the location of your cabling but in a crowded closet it can be difficult to find the correct cable or pair. Fluke networks Pro 3000 toner and probe features smart tone technology which allows you to identify individual wire pairs even when in close proximity to other wires. Using SmartTone with the pro 3000 the tone and probe can be done in three simple steps. first turn on the pro 3000 tone generator and press the button until the red light on the left is blinking. Then connect it to the cable you want to trace using the pro 3000 probe at the opposite end of the cable and listen to the distinct tone. To confirm you've got the right pair simply touch the tested pair together for two seconds to create a short if it's the right pair the tone will change each time you short.
