Ever increasing network and device complexity has increased the impact of device-network interaction on the subscriber’s experience. Unfortunately, testing has not yet caught up and instead remains focused on device-specific or network-specific KPIs. Operators, infrastructure and device vendors may all profit from a new focus on device-network interaction and could realize immediate benefits in reducing time to identify root causes of poor performance.

The complexity of technology has increased exponentially. Not only have interactions between the device and the network become more frequent, they have also become more complex. Testing today is still very device or network centric in nature, not providing a complete picture of performance since it often misses the (increasing) device–network interactions that significantly impact the network. Even a device that has been successfully tested and accepted using today’s device or network centric methods could still have a debilitating impact on the network because of the critical (yet unmeasured) device-network interaction.
