China Mobile is predicting that by the end of this year the company will have 150 million 4G mobile subscribers. The company expects that number to double to 300 million by the end of 2016. Just to give you an idea of how big this is, in October China Mobile just reached 50 million 4G subscribers. The company has more than 800 million total subscribers.
In India, Bharti Airetel is expanding 4G LTE services in the Punjab region. The carrier is investing $650 million to expand 4G to all cities, towns and villages across Punjab. Bharti Airtel and the Punjab government signed the agreement that also includes laying additional fiber optic cables to boost broadband services in rural areas.
In big telco cloud news, Huawei and Red Hat have announced a partnership for a new OpenStack designed for network function virtualization. OpenStack is a Linux-based open source cloud platform. A Huawei rep called the new solution a true carrier-grade product.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that consumer demand for quality Wi-Fi is putting pressure on venue owners to upgrade their hardware. Reporter John Jurgensen poses the question: “If you can’t send a selfie from a rock concert or an NFL game, does it still count as being there?”
