-South Korean state investigators raided carrier SK Telecom’s headquarters in Seoul. Authorities suspect that the company’s healthcare division may have illegally collected patients’ medical records. Prosecutors and police detectives seized computer hard drives and documents in an effort to determine if SK Telecom gathered user healthcare data without consent.

-European carrier EE is set to deploy a new solution designed by U.S.-based firm Parallel Wireless to improve mobile coverage in hard-to-reach parts of the United Kingdom. The Parallel Wireless product avoids the need for large masts and broadband or cabiling by using a small antenna to wirelessly connect to the nearest macro base station.

-Intel’s next generation of processor is being used by Hewlett-Packard in their Integrity and UX server systems. The new Intel Itanium 9500 is 33 percent faster than its predecessor and contains 3.1. billion transistors. HP reps said the chip will support better resiliency and scalability for mission critical IT infrastructure. For telecom carriers looking to transition to a virtualized cloud-based environment, the new server-powered chips could drive that process.

-Working to make inroads into the lucrative mobile market, Microsfot announced its acquisition of Acompli. That company provides a well-reviewed mobile email app for iOS and Android. This is part of an ongoing company-wide effort to bring more utility to mobile devices. Similarly, Microsoft rolled out the Office software suite for iPhone and iPad and is working on an analog rollout for Android.
