Description

In this conversation with Shyamal Ramachandran, Director of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies we talked about the improved voice quality that ARM wideband and EVS super wideband codecs can deliver, and how the combination of LTE and Wi-Fi support new use cases for voice and video services.

“We are seeing interest in multi-device use cases, where people might want to retain a cell phone as the primary voice device but might also want to pair a tablet or perhaps their laptop PC – or any number of other connected devices that have a microphone and speaker – into the mix,” Shyamal told us. As a result, VoLTE and VoWi-Fi become a “tool that operators could use to compete with OTT applications and provide better-than- before voice quality to all their subscribers.”

VoLTE also changes the way mobile operators assess the quality of voice services. Shyamal said: “When it comes to voice as a service, the KPIs, or key performance indicators, that operators are used to – the traditional ones – do remain relevant. But there are newer metrics that also ought to be monitored, because we are talking about a switch from the circuit-switched transport, like I mentioned, to the newer packet-switched transport. Also, KPIs that reflect on true voice MOS, or voice quality, those are critical as well. Newer KPIs that have become very relevant now are those supporting SRVCC. These are call-continuity options between packet-switched air interfaces and circuit-switched air interfaces.”
